Where is Kyrgyzstan? Kyrgyzstan, in long-form the Kyrgyz Republic is a country in Central Asia. Extremely mountainous, originally populated by nomadic populations, this former republic of the USSR obtained its independence when the latter collapsed in 1991. Its inhabitants are called Kyrgyz and speak Kyrgyz, a language of Turkish origin.

Etymology: “Kyrgyz” is believed to have been derived from the forty clans of Manas, a legendary hero who united forty regional clans to be strong against the enemies.

Location: Post-Soviet republic situated in Central Asia. Landlocked and mountainous, it is bounded on the north by Kazakhstan, east and south-east by China, on the south by Tajikistan and on the west by Uzbekistan.

Language: Kyrgyz is the National language and because the country was under a strong cultural influence from Russia the language is rather Russified as an official language. Most ethnic groups use Russian as the language of communication. 

Territory: 198.500 miles km2. 95 % of the territory are the mountains, dominated by the massive Tien- Shan and Pamir. The highest peaks rise above than 7000m. Two large and imposing mountain ranges – the Tian Shan and Pamir mountains – dominate Kyrgyzstan’s landscape and are an inextricable part of its culture. Known as the Land of Celestial Mountains, the country is home to some of the world’s highest peaks outside Himalaya. Anciently on the famous Silk Road that connected China to the Mediterranean, Kyrgyzstan’s rich history is still a part of its present.

What’s the weather like?

Expect cold winters and warm and sunny summers. It is usually cool up in the mountains, even during the summer months, but can get scorchingly hot at low altitude cities.

Best time to visit:
July to September is the best time to visit if you are planning on going on a trek or have a specific mountaineering goal in mind. The winter months (February to March) are great for ski touring in Kyrgyzstan.
